Lau Blaxekjær, who has participated in the UN climate negotiations for five years, will speak about how the global leadership of a small island state made COP21 succesful. The Marshall Islands, together with for example Norway and Sweden, was pivotal both in front and behind the scenes in Paris in establishing new diplomatic alliances that made the Paris Agreement a reality. This presentation reminds the audience that being small and vulnerable – but also dedicated, innovative, and resourceful – is sometimes better than being big and powerful. What will it take for a country like the Faroe Islands to become a global climate action leader?

Short term forecasting of renewable energy resources

Renewable energy resources such as e.g. the wind power production for the following day are forecasted based on meteorological forecasts and knowledge about technical availability equipment such as wind turbines. Based on actual measurements the forecasts are checked against reality and adjusted if required. We consider an energy system based on 100% renewable resources and discuss why forecasting of the renewable energy resources are required in order to take appropriate control actions in real time. This discussion is addressed both from a market perspective and from a technical perspective exemplified via an isolated system. Finally, we exemplify how advanced forecast types can be used.

El Hierro, towards energy self-sufficiency

El Hierro Island, the smallest of the Canary Islands, struggle for energy self-sufficiency. In the last year it has made significant achievements / results after the implementation of the Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station, a project of Gorona del Viento El Hierro.

The system of renewable generation, energetic use systems of wind and hydro power, has already achieved significant numbers of replacing fossil fuel in El Hierro Island and outstanding share data monthly generation, to produce, for example during the month of July, 67% of electricity from the island of El Hierro.

Gorona del Viento El Hierro, S.A. is a semi-public company majority owned by Cabildo de El Hierro, the Insular Government. Other shareholders are Endesa electricity company and Canary Islands Government.

The example of El Hierro can help to maximize the use of renewable energy in isolated territories and guarantee the supply of energy and also, very importantly, water to the population.
